8K vs 4K VR porn: which resolution do you actually need?

Short answer: on a Meta Quest 3 or 3S, aim for 6K to 8K. 4K looks soft in any modern headset, and 12K only pays off on micro-OLED headsets such as the Samsung Galaxy XR or Apple Vision Pro.

Why 4K looks blurry in VR

On a TV, 4K pixels are spread across a screen in front of you. In VR, a 180° scene stretches its pixels across half a sphere around you, and the picture is also split between your two eyes. So a "4K" VR file gives each eye only 1,920 pixels across 180 degrees.

The useful number is pixels per degree: how many video pixels land in each degree of your view.

Match the video to your headset

A headset can only show so much detail. Roughly, a Quest 3 or 3S shows around 20 to 25 pixels per degree; the Galaxy XR, with 3,552 × 3,840 pixels per eye over a 109° field of view, shows over 30.

  • Quest 3S: 6K to 8K is the sweet spot. Beyond 8K you pay in file size and battery, not in sharpness. Guide: Quest 3S.

Resolution is not everything

  • Bitrate. A heavily compressed 8K stream can look worse than a well-encoded 6K download. If a site offers both, downloads usually look better.
  • Frame rate. 60 fps makes head movement smoother than 30 fps.
  • Production. Lighting and camera quality matter as much as pixel count. That is why a single premium studio such as VR Bangers can look better than an older 8K scene from a smaller studio.
