The VR Verdict

VR porn glossary

The words VR sites use, explained in one or two sentences each.

Video formats

180° video
The scene fills the half-sphere in front of you. Most VR porn is 180°, because all the pixels go where you are looking.
360° video
The scene surrounds you completely. It spreads the same pixels twice as wide as 180°, so it looks softer at the same resolution. More: 180° vs 360°.
3D (stereoscopic)
Each eye gets a slightly different picture, which gives depth. Almost all VR porn is 3D.
SBS (side by side)
The left-eye and right-eye pictures sit next to each other in one file. The most common layout.
TB or OU (top-bottom, over-under)
The two eye pictures are stacked vertically instead. Players need to know which layout a file uses; many detect it automatically.
Fisheye
A lens projection some studios shoot and deliver in instead of the usual equirectangular one. Your player must support it or the picture looks warped.
Equirectangular
The standard way to flatten a sphere of video into a rectangle. If a file does not say otherwise, it is probably equirectangular.

Quality

4K, 6K, 8K, 12K
The total width of the video file. Because the width is split between two eyes and spread across 180°, 8K in VR looks far less sharp than 8K on a TV. Full explanation: 8K vs 4K VR porn.
Pixels per degree
How many pixels land in each degree of your view. The useful way to compare video and headsets.
Bitrate
How much data each second of video uses. A low-bitrate 8K stream can look worse than a high-bitrate 6K download.
60 fps
Sixty frames per second. Smoother than 30 fps when you move your head.

Interaction and space

POV
Point of view: the camera is where your head would be, so you see the scene as a participant.
6DOF (six degrees of freedom)
You can move your head and body inside the scene, not just look around. Regular VR video is 3DOF: you can turn your head but not lean in. More: 6DOF VR porn explained.
Volumetric video
Performers captured in 3D, so you can walk around them. Example: Braindance.
Passthrough
The headset's cameras show your real room. Needed for AR scenes. Colour passthrough on a Quest 3 or 3S looks far better than the black-and-white Quest 2.
AR scenes
Scenes with the background removed, so the performer appears in your own room through passthrough. See the best AR and passthrough sites.
AI passthrough
Software that blends a regular VR scene into your room without it having been filmed for AR.
Toy scripts (funscripts)
Files that sync a compatible interactive device to the action in a scene. Full explainer: VR porn toy scripts.
Binaural audio
Sound recorded with two microphones at ear positions, so it seems to come from the right place around you.

Apps and setup

VR video player
An app that plays VR files with the right projection. Comparison: best VR video player.
WebXR
The technology that lets a website run in VR inside the headset browser. Browser games and many site players use it.
Sideloading
Installing an app on a Quest from outside the Meta store, usually with SideQuest and developer mode. Steps: how to play VR porn games on Quest 3.
Link and Air Link
Ways to connect a Quest to a gaming PC, by cable or over Wi-Fi, to run PC VR apps.
DLNA and SMB
Ways to share video files from a PC or network drive so a headset player can stream them. See how to download VR videos to Quest.

Memberships
